Identity Theft / Life Time Fitness

Last night, FOX 4 News here in Dallas / Fort Worth ran a story about an Identity Theft case at Life Time Fitness. I only caught the news teaser during a commercial break, so I went online to read the full story (click to read).

A couple things popped out at me.

1. Texas Attorney General is suing Life Time fitness for not keeping customer records safe (records that contain sensitive, personal information).

2. The news clip then explains that in those personal records found in an outside dumpster, social security numbers, driver's license numbers, credit/debit card numbers, names, and addresses were found.

Question:

What in the world is Life Time Fitness doing collecting social security numbers and driver's license numbers from their customers? R U Kidding ME?!?!?!

There are way too many businesses out there that think they have the right to ask for that information. I can promise you this, that's a qualification if you want my business. If you think you need my SS number for me to be a customer; then I'm not a customer, it's that simple.

Why is Life Time Fitness asking for that information? And further more, why are people giving it to them? In no way should running on a tread mill require your social security number.
